Ingmar Bergman

Discovering Ingmar Bergman

When I first dipped my toes into Bergman’s films, I didn’t really know what to expect. I had grown up on horror, Italian cinema and cult classics, so Swedish art house seemed like a leap. It turned out to be the kind of leap that changed the way I see movies forever. Watching The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries for the first time was a revelation. These films felt intimate yet epic, like conversations about life itself. They deal with tough topics—death, faith, loneliness—but they do it with grace and beauty. That combination drew me in then, and it still draws me in now.

Why The Seventh Seal Became a Classic

Ask most people to name a Bergman film and The Seventh Seal is probably what you’ll hear. It follows a knight returning from the Crusades who meets Death and invites him to a game of chess. At first glance it sounds morbid, but what surprised me most was the film’s warmth. There’s humour, gentle moments of love, and a sense that everyone’s questions about life are universal. It’s a story about searching for meaning, and it’s told in a way that stays with you long after the final shot.

Wild Strawberries and Memory in Cinema

One of the great pleasures of cinema is seeing it explore memory, and Wild Strawberries does that beautifully. The story centres on an ageing doctor who takes a road trip and uses the journey to reflect on his life. I found myself thinking about my own past in a new way while watching it. The dream sequences are surreal yet relatable, and the film gently reminds us that even a life filled with regrets can contain moments of joy. It’s a masterclass in using quiet, simple storytelling to evoke deep emotions.

Persona and Psychological Storytelling

When I first watched Persona, I couldn’t stop talking about it. This film is a haunting two‑hander that plays like an emotional puzzle. It follows a famous actress who stops speaking and a nurse assigned to care for her. As they spend time together, their identities blur until it’s hard to tell where one woman ends and the other begins. The result is a hypnotic exploration of identity and psychological boundaries. It feels experimental but never pretentious, and it has influenced everyone from David Lynch to Christopher Nolan.

Ingmar Bergman’s Influence on Modern Directors

It wasn’t until I started exploring other filmmakers that I realised just how far Bergman’s influence reaches. Directors such as Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Andrei Tarkovsky and Lars von Trier have all cited him as an inspiration. You can see his fingerprints in films that focus on complex relationships, moral ambiguity or existential dread. Woody Allen’s Interiors and Husbands and Wives directly channel Bergman’s approach to character. Even psychological thrillers owe him a debt for Persona’s daring structure. Once you spot these connections, you start to see Bergman everywhere.

Why Bergman Changed Art House Cinema

What makes Bergman’s legacy so enduring is that he treated film as art while still making it accessible. He didn’t rely on big budgets or special effects, yet he captured universal questions in a way that resonates today. His work helped elevate cinema to the same level of respect as literature or theatre. Every time I return to his films, I’m struck by their timeless quality. They remind me that movies can tackle heavy themes and still be profoundly beautiful. As a viewer and a film lover, I’m grateful for that.
